Final theses and projects

Students who wish write their thesis or project (also in guided self study modules) with Prof. Gius are required to participate in the Thesis and Project Seminar held by Prof. Gius.

I supervise theses on the following topics:

Narrative Text Analysis

  • Narratological analyses of literary texts (including popular literature), either manual or computer-assisted
  • Annotation projects on individual texts (developing and applying an original approach, or applying existing annotation guidelines to literary texts as well as transmedial approaches)
  • Development and evaluation of computational transmedial analysis approaches
  • Research on narratological concepts such as plot/action

Corpus Creation

  • Compilation and preparation of literary or transmedial corpora (e.g., data cleaning, metadata extraction or enrichment, corpus analysis)
  • Development and application of methods for basic corpus analysis

Reviews on methods and topics in Computational Literary Studies

  • Reviews of current research on specific types of texts (e.g., plays, fairy tales, fan fiction, or works by specific authors)
  • Reviews of current approaches to particular analytical concepts (e.g., characters, plot, conflict)

Computational Analyses

  • Methods for segmenting literary texts
  • Analysis of selected phenomena in literary texts (including transmedial analyses)

Natural Language Processing Methods for Literary Analysis

  • Survey papers on specific NLP methods in Computational Literary Studies (e.g., word embeddings, topic modeling, keyness analysis)
  • Evaluation of the applicability of new methods for the analysis of literary texts (including transmedial approaches)
  • Research on the context dependence of metrics such as inter-annotator agreement and F1 scores

CATMA / Software Development

  • Analysis of anonymized support requests
  • Quantitative evaluation and analysis of projects, for example based on the number of resources, tags, annotations, etc.
  • Conceptual development of new features, analysis methods, or visualizations relevant to the areas listed above (including for GitMA)
