CURRENT METHODOLOGIES IN D. H. LAWRENCE STUDIES

Symposium

TU Darmstadt

3-5 July 2008

“A critic must be emotionally alive in every fibre, intellectually capable and skilful in essential logic, and then morally very honest.”

(D. H. Lawrence, ‘John Galsworthy’)

‘Current Methodologies in D. H. Lawrence Studies’ is a 3-day symposium organised by Julika Griem and Andrew Harrison, bringing together leading Lawrence critics to share and discuss their ongoing research. The event will open with a public lecture on Lawrence and Frieda von Richthofen by celebrated biographer John Worthen. Contributors to the subsequent panels will include Fiona Becket, Michael Bell, Howard J. Booth, Robert Burden, Keith Cushman, Peter Preston, Neil Roberts, and Jeff Wallace. The symposium will explore the various contexts in which Lawrence’s works are currently discussed. These will include philosophy, ecology, queer theory, spatial theory, and discourses on race and nationality; Lawrence’s work will also be considered in relation to the literary marketplace, the visual arts, and the author’s influence on contemporary British culture.

Further details of the symposium will follow. Please address all queries to Dr Andrew Harrison, harrison(at)linglit.tu-darmstadt.de
